Aging & Autism: Exploring the Challenges of Autistic Seniors
As the global population continues to age, research in gerontology and geriatrics has helped improve the quality of life for many older adults, but it often fails to adequately address the unique needs of autistic individuals including those with or without intellectual disabilities. This population faces distinct challenges as they age, including a higher prevalence of co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions, atypical symptom presentation, communication difficulties, and limited access to age-appropriate and disability-informed care.
In partnership with the Autism Research Institute (ARI), the NLM Family Foundation provided support for a United Nations’ Think Tank Discussion on Aging and Autism which prioritized discussions around community living and health screening, aligned with international standards and guidelines, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive approach to addressing the specific health and aging challenges faced by autistic adults in mid and later years.
The think tank built upon previous work, focusing on critical areas including: Physical and Mental Health in Aging; Healthcare Access, Navigation, and Delivery; Community, Autonomy, and Daily Life; and Social Determinants of Health and Discrimination.
Participants included autistic individuals who are senior-aged or approaching senior years, their family members, clinicians, and researchers, with direct expertise in aging and autism. Delegates explored micro-level practice improvements, mezzo-level integration across healthcare and community programming, and macro-level systemic advancements to enhance quality of life.
