Reflections of a Mother: Life with My Son and Profound Autism

Being the mother of a 22-year-old with profound nonverbal autism is a journey marked by both heartache and grace. There are days when the tears fall freely—not out of pity, but from the quiet mourning of the life I once imagined for my child. The milestones that others take for granted—a spoken “I love you,” a diploma, a college degree, independence—those are chapters we will never write.

But over time, something inside you shifts.

You stop measuring life by what will never be and begin celebrating what is. A moment of eye contact. A shared laugh. The simple joy of a walk in the woods or the calm that comes with a rhythmic routine. These become your victories. You learn to dream differently—not smaller, but deeper. You redefine success and find joy in places others might overlook.

This journey has stretched me in ways I never expected. I’ve become more patient, more compassionate, and more aware of the beauty that exists in the quiet moments. My life is richer because of the lessons my son teaches me daily—lessons about resilience, presence, and unconditional love.
